Choosing an installer

Heat Pump Installers Near Me: How to Choose One in Upstate NY & Vermont (and Who Mitsubishi Certifies)

Choose a heat pump installer that is manufacturer-certified, does a real load calculation, commissions the system, services what it installs and backs the labor for years. Superior CO-OP HVAC is a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor ELITE, the highest installer tier.

  • Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor ELITE
  • 12-year parts & labor warranty
  • 180-Day Comfort Guarantee
  • Veteran-owned since 2013

Why the installer matters more than the brand

Two homeowners can buy the same Mitsubishi outdoor unit and get very different results. Equipment determines the ceiling. The installer determines whether you reach it.

The common causes of unhappy heat pump owners are not defective machines. They are undersized or oversized systems, poorly pitched drain lines, refrigerant lines that were not pressure-tested and evacuated properly, outdoor units mounted at ground level in snow, and no one to call when something goes wrong.

That is why a search for installers near you should be a search for a standard, not just a price. The rest of this page gives you a checklist you can use with us or anyone else. If a contractor cannot answer these plainly, keep looking.

One more thing to weigh is who will still be around in year five. Heat pumps are not install-and-forget; they need yearly attention, occasional repairs and someone who knows the house. Ask each contractor how long they have been in business, whether they service their own installs, and whether you can talk to past customers. We have been in business since 2013, and our 4.9-star rating comes from more than 250 Google reviews.

What Diamond Contractor ELITE means

Mitsubishi Electric certifies installers in tiers. Diamond Contractor ELITE is the highest tier. Superior CO-OP HVAC has held it since 2020 and has installed Mitsubishi exclusively for heat pumps since January 2020. We also earned the Mitsubishi Grow Award in 2023.

In practice the designation signals that a contractor is vetted and trained by the manufacturer, installs to Mitsubishi's specifications,. It is a better indicator than a logo on a truck.

It still isn't a substitute for your own questions. You can verify a contractor's status with Mitsubishi directly. Our showroom at the Cambridge shop was the first working Mitsubishi heat pump showroom in the Capital District, and our own crews do the installs. We use no subcontractors and no call center. Read more about why homeowners choose us.

Eight questions to ask any installer

  1. Will you perform a Manual J load calculation? Sizing by square footage alone is a red flag.
  2. Do you commission the system? Ask what testing is done and documented at the end.
  3. Who services it afterward? Get a name and a phone number.
  4. How long is the labor warranty? One year is common. We provide 12 years of parts and labor on Mitsubishi installs through our Elite Care Plan, with spring and fall maintenance required.
  5. Who files the rebate paperwork? We handle the entire application.
  6. What is the outdoor unit mounted on? We use aluminum stands that do not rust.
  7. Are pan heaters included? They matter in Vermont winters.
  8. Do you install surge protection? It protects the boards.

Ask for answers in the written proposal. Good contractors write them down.

Red flags

  • Equipment bought online and offered for installation only. Warranty coverage and support can be compromised, and the installer has no stake in the equipment.
  • DIY or pre-charged kits sold for self-installation. They can leave you with a system no certified shop will warrant.
  • One-year labor warranty with nothing beyond it.
  • A quote on the phone with no visit, no measurement and no load calculation.
  • Pressure to sign today. Our estimates are free and we do not pressure.
  • Vague language about rebates, such as "you'll get a big rebate" without saying who handles it.
  • Outdoor units on the ground in snow country.
  • No local office or showroom.

A low price with several of these is not a bargain. It is deferred cost. See our install standard in the installation process.

What Superior CO-OP HVAC does on every install

Where we install

We work within about a 90-minute radius of Cambridge, NY, with a North office in Ticonderoga. See the full service areas page or the Service Area Map. Popular town pages:

Not on the list? Call us. If you are within reach, we will tell you.

Our Cambridge shop and showroom are at 2531 NY-22, and our North office in Ticonderoga (15 Montcalm Street) serves the Adirondack side of the territory. Having two real offices matters when you need service: you are calling a local company with its own crews, not a dispatcher in another state. We also repair and maintain all brands of furnaces, boilers, central AC and water heaters, so you have one call for the whole house.

In Vermont we work across Bennington and Rutland counties, and in New York from the Capital Region up through Warren, Essex and Franklin counties. Travel is part of the job for us, and we price it into the proposal rather than adding it later.

What to do next

Frequently asked questions

What does Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor ELITE mean?

Superior CO-OP HVAC has been a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor ELITE since 2020. It is Mitsubishi's highest installer tier, meaning the contractor is manufacturer-vetted, and trained to install to Mitsubishi specifications. You can verify status with Mitsubishi directly. You can confirm a contractor's current status with Mitsubishi directly if you want independent verification.

How do I choose a heat pump installer?

Superior CO-OP HVAC suggests choosing a manufacturer-certified contractor that performs a Manual J load calculation, commissions the system, services what it installs, offers a long labor warranty and handles rebate paperwork. Ask for those answers in a written proposal and compare at least two.

Is it okay to buy a heat pump online and hire an installer?

Superior CO-OP HVAC advises against it. Online equipment and DIY kits can complicate warranty coverage and leave no one accountable for sizing or commissioning. Buying the equipment and the installation from one contractor keeps the sizing, installation, warranty and service under one responsible company.

How long should the labor warranty be?

Superior CO-OP HVAC provides a 12-year parts and labor warranty on Mitsubishi installs through the Elite Care Plan, with spring and fall maintenance visits required. Many installers offer only one year of labor, so ask for the term in writing before you sign.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Superior CO-OP HVAC provides free in-home estimates with a written proposal. We measure, check your electrical panel and perform a load calculation, then confirm rebates. Finishing the Heating Cost Calculator before the appointment earns $250 off with the savings code on your report.

What areas do you serve?

Superior CO-OP HVAC serves about a 90-minute radius of Cambridge, NY, including the Capital Region, Washington, Saratoga, Rensselaer, Warren, Essex and Franklin counties, the Adirondacks, and Bennington and Rutland counties in Vermont. Our North office is in Ticonderoga. The farther you are from Cambridge, the more it helps to call first so we can confirm scheduling.

Compare us against the checklist. Book a free in-home estimate or call (518) 719-5614. Our crews, not subcontractors, do every install.
