How do I know my water heater is about to fail?
Reduced or inconsistent hot water, rumbling or banging from the tank, water pooling at the base, rusty or smelly water, or a unit past 8–10 years old. Any one of these is worth an inspection before it becomes a flooded basement.
How long does a water heater last?
Standard tanks: 8–12 years. Past year 10 you are on borrowed time, and a planned replacement is cheaper than an emergency one with water damage. Hybrid heat pump water heaters typically carry 10-year warranties.
What is a hybrid heat pump water heater?
A tank with a small heat pump on top. It pulls heat from the air in the basement or utility room and moves it into the water, using 60–70% less electricity than a standard electric tank. Electric elements kick in only when demand spikes. It's the same technology as our heating systems in a smaller box.
Are there rebates?
National Grid offers a rebate on qualifying heat pump water heaters in Upstate NY, and Efficiency Vermont offers one in Vermont. The federal tax credit expired for installs after December 31, 2025. We confirm exactly what applies before you commit.
My boiler makes my hot water. What happens when I switch to a heat pump?
You'll need a dedicated water heater. We plan a hybrid heat pump water heater into the conversion so you never lose hot water, and its rebate stacks on top of the heat pump rebate.
How long does replacement take?
Most tank or hybrid replacements are done in a single day. Adding a tankless system where none existed may take one to two days.
