Check these first (2 minutes)
- Thermostat or remote set to HEAT, not Fan/Dry/Auto-cool
- Breaker for the outdoor unit hasn't tripped
- Indoor filters clean; outdoor unit not buried in snow or ice
- Steam and a short pause is a normal defrost cycle — wait 10 minutes
- Furnace: power switch on, filter clean, pilot/ignition lit, oil tank not empty
