Does My Furnace Really Need an Annual Inspection?

Why some homeowners skip it

If the furnace started last winter without trouble, an inspection can feel like a wasted visit. But a furnace is a machine with burners, sensors, a blower and a combustion path, and most of its problems build slowly. By the time something fails, you are already in a cold snap with a long wait for service.

In Upstate New York and Vermont a furnace may run thousands of hours each heating season, from roughly October to April, so wear is real. A yearly look is the best way to see it coming.

What an inspection covers

• Heat exchanger inspection for cracks and corrosion
• Burner cleaning and flame check
• Ignition and safety controls
• Flue and venting inspection
• Carbon monoxide test at the equipment
• Blower motor, belts and filter
• Thermostat operation and temperature rise

For oil systems, a technician also cleans the nozzle, replaces the filter and checks the chimney connection and fuel line.

Safety is the main reason

A cracked heat exchanger or blocked vent can leak carbon monoxide without any obvious sign, and the furnace may heat the house normally while it happens. Dirty burners, weak igniters and dusty blowers waste fuel. Many manufacturers require proof of annual service to keep parts coverage valid, so skipping the visit can cost you later.
